UNESCO World Heritage Journeys

Challenge

How can we inspire travelers to explore Europe’s lesser-known World Heritage Sites while protecting cultural heritage and supporting sustainable tourism development?

Solution

To answer this challenge, UNESCO and the European Union partnered with Solimar International and National Geographic to launch the World Heritage Journeys of the European Union—a groundbreaking initiative to promote cultural heritage tourism across Europe. Solimar led the destination development and stakeholder engagement strategy, working directly with World Heritage site managers, destination marketers, and tour operators across four thematic travel routes. By organizing participatory workshops, building strong governance frameworks, and developing strategies for coordinated management and marketing, Solimar helped elevate the visibility and sustainability of Europe’s heritage tourism offer. The result was the launch of a robust, multimedia-rich digital platform https://visitworldheritage.com that connects travelers with immersive itineraries across 34 UNESCO-recognized destinations.

Lessons Learned

1.

Thematic Storytelling Increases Cultural Relevance – By organizing World Heritage Sites into thematic routes—like Royal Europe, Ancient Europe, Romantic Europe, and Underground Europe—Solimar helped reframe familiar destinations through new, compelling narratives that spark curiosity and deeper engagement.

2.

Heritage Tourism Requires Coordination, Not Just Promotion – Solimar’s support in developing collaborative action plans and governance structures was important in aligning local governments, site managers, and private sector operators—ensuring consistent messaging and stewardship.

3.

Digital Platforms Must Be Both Beautiful and Useful – The development of a map-based desktop and mobile platform enabled travelers to explore curated itineraries and multimedia content that balanced inspiration with practical trip planning.

4.

Capacity Building Unlocks Long-Term Sustainability – Solimar designed and delivered tailored training programs to equip local destination managers with the tools needed to manage tourism more effectively and sustainably.

5.

Sustainable Tourism Strengthens Cultural Preservation – The initiative proved that thoughtfully managed tourism can be a force for heritage protection—generating awareness, revenue, and a renewed sense of pride among local communities.
