Geotourism Map Guides
Our Geotourism MapGuides not only promote destinations, but also bring local stakeholders together to develop distinctive and authentic visitor experiences. In each destination, Solimar and National Geographic Maps employ a participatory planning process by facilitating the creation of a Sustainable Tourism Stewardship Council. This council is a local entity represented by various organizations and interests in the destination. Together with Solimar and National Geographic Maps, this Council creates a co-branded National Geographic MapGuide that highlights the natural, historic and cultural assets unique to the destination. The mapguide is not only a superb educational and promotion tool, but also the first step in a locally grown program to celebrate, sustain and profit form the destination’s unique attributes.
With the assistance of Solimar and National Geographic Maps, the Sustainable Tourism Stewardship Council solicits site nominations from local residents and selects those sites that best present the area’s character and heritage. We then work with local partners to create and implement a website and/or mapguide that clearly convey the destination’s unique attributes to local residents and foreign visitors alike.
The MapGuide content is intended to meet these goals:
- Promote forms of tourism that best sustain the natural and cultural attributes of a place, particularly those that benefit local communities;
- Better inform local residents about the character of their locales, including cultural, historic and environmental assets; how protecting and enhancing them can provide economic benefits;
- Similarly inform tourists, including the supportive roles they can play while visiting;
- Provide this information at National Geographic Maps’ standards of editorial quality and credibility; and
- Provide this information for free in an attractive way.
The resulting MapGuide can take the form of a printed map, online map or both. The printed MapGuide is a two-sided map-brochure of superior quality that conveys geotourism information in the form of a map and accompanying text. The printed map version encompass information from the Geotourism website captured at any one particular time. Co-branded with the destination through a local working group, the MapGuide is intended for wide distribution, preferably free of charge, but can be used as a source for revenue generation.
The Printed MapGuide features both cartographic (roads, cities, political boundaries, national parks, etc.) and editorial content (history, cuisine, photographs, tips, etc.).
